Much more than Tech Support: Neighborhood Nerds are Life Support!

It might be surprising to some, but about 12 percent of our Members are senior women living alone that are either widowed, divorced, or have always been single. Our Nerds play a big part in their lives. Not only do we help with technology, but on one occasion we even saved a life! 

One of our Members was a regular in the Member Center. We would see her every day or every other day. When she hadn’t called or dropped by in a few days, we started to get worried, so we called to check on her. After leaving a message, one of our Nerds decided to run over to knock on the door.  When the Nerd arrived, she knocked on the door and there was no response. She heard noises coming from inside, so she called the superintendent. When they entered the home, they found the Member laying on the floor in the kitchen. She had been on the floor for over 15 hours! Our Nerd called 911 immediately, and the Member was rushed to the hospital. That day, we may have saved a life. If we hadn’t checked on them, who knows when someone would have found them. The Nerds are always ready and willing to help! Surprisingly, this isn’t a one-time occurrence. Similar stories with similar outcomes have been shared by several Nerds over the years! We truly love and care about our Members!

• Set-up an email account
• Add family and friends to phone contact list
• Deal with Comcast
• Print/Complete doctor forms

Other things the Nerds do for Members: 

• Change lightbulbs
• Fix Trash Compactors
• Call an Uber or Lyft
• Check on the member to make sure they’re okay
• Communicate with children so they know their parent/grandparent is alright
• Walk the dog
